Bird Toys Introduction

It may seem that all you need to go if you get a bird is to provide a cage for it, somewhere to sit in the cage, something to eat and drink, and somewhere for it to do its business. Although you could get away with that, if you want a happy, and stimulated bird then there is much more that you can do. We talk about ‘bird brains’ as often being people without much intelligence, but birds are actually quite intelligent and certainly require some stimulation in their lives to be happy, and who wants their pet bird to be bored?

Bird Toys

Buying toys for your bird can be just as complicated as buying toys for your children. Although you may not need to get bird toys that are bird appropriate, you will need to consider buying toys for your bird that are size appropriate. A toy designed for a small budgerigar may not be appropriate for a parrot or cockatiel, and vice versa. Fortunately, a quality online outlet like http://www.birdtoyoutlet.com has toys for different type of bird – parrots, cockatiels, macaws, other large birds etc. (we don’t think they mean eagles!)

The first thing is to make sure that the cage for your bird is big enough to accommodate the extra stimulation of bird toys, or even whether you need toys that can stimulate your bird outside of the cage. It is possible to get portable gyms and towers for example to stimulate parrots when they are outside of their cage environment.

Birds often like bright colors, which often mimic their natural environment (and remember that many birds use bright colors as a way of being attractive to other birds. Therefore bright colored toys are an excellent way of getting their attention and stimulating their mind. Don’t just put their food in a bowl, instead put it in a swinging multi-colored bird feeder that will not only get their attention but also give them a bit of exercise and a bit of a challenge when they want to feed. You don’t want to make it impossible for them to get their food, but a bit of a challenge will stimulate their brain and keep them happy.

Most bird cages have a perch, but why not have one with a difference? Perches of different heights or with musical toys like bells. Birds like the noise of playing with a bell, so why not have bells of different sizes or noises in the cage for the bird to play with. The more the inside of the bird’s cage looks like a gym, the chances are the more the bird is going to enjoy themselves playing inside there.

Birds do love to play. If you look at birds at a water trough they are often naturally playful, so why not allow some water into their play by making their water bowl big enough for them to have a splash about it. Just make sure that anything (and anyone!) near their cage can take a bit of water damage without too much fuss!

Most birds also love to shred things as a form of destructive entertainment, so why not provide a toy that they can shred, as it makes them much less likely to look for things to shred when you let them out of their cage. You can buy chew rings in a variety of sizes, all of which are perfect for those birds who like to destroy things are part of their daily entertainment.
